Smith Proves She’s Constitutionally Illiterate, Lewis Doubles Down on Support of Judge Barrett
October 12th, 2020
EAGAN, Minn. — U.S. Senate candidate Jason Lewis released the following statement after the first day of Senate confirmation hearings for Supreme Court nominee Amy Coney Barrett.
“Before the hearings even started, Senator Tina Smith pledged to vote ‘no’ on Barrett’s confirmation because she says Barrett won’t rule the way she wants. This is wholly inappropriate. I have no idea how Judge Barrett is going to rule on anything, nor would I ask her if I were in the Senate today. These hearings should be focused on judicial philosophy, not Democrats’ policy-based litmus tests. But, coming from the party that also wants to pack the Court, it’s clear they have no regard for the separation of powers and the judicial branch.
“Constitutionally illiterate Democrats like Senator Tina Smith worry that Amy Coney Barrett will somehow undo Obamacare or other statutes because they think the Supreme Court makes laws; Republicans think judges must apply the law as written by legislators. Big difference.
“We need someone like Judge Barrett confirmed to the Court so she will interpret the Constitution as it is written, especially when it comes to the Second Amendment, which is more important than ever given Democrats’ efforts to abolish the police.”
