Lewis Says SCOTUS Vacancy Puts More Significance on Already Close Senate Race
September 21st, 2020
EAGAN, Minn. — U.S. Senate candidate Jason Lewis released the following statement on how the vacancy left on the Supreme Court impacts the already close Senate race here in Minnesota.
“The Supreme Court vacancy puts even more significance on our state’s very close Senate race and once again highlights the clear differences between myself and Senator Tina Smith,” said Lewis. “From her openly hostile views of the Second Amendment to her support of post birth abortion, Senator Smith has shown her complete disregard for the values of Minnesotans. Indeed, her radical views on these issues puts her way outside the constitutional mainstream. Our toss-up race just became even more important because our next Senator could be voting to confirm multiple Supreme Court justices. The choice Minnesotans make this November could end up deciding the fate of the Supreme Court for decades to come and we simply cannot afford to have Senator Smith putting more activist judges on the bench.”
Lewis has warned of a looming constitutional crisis if a new Supreme Court justice is not appointed and confirmed swiftly and decisively. If the 2020 election results end up being in question and the decision is sent to the Supreme Court, the ruling could end up being a 4-4 deadlock. Lewis has said this would be a “constitutional crisis without precedent and the Republic may not be able to survive it.”
